White Lies: Live August 3, 2011 – The Phoenix Concert Theatre, Toronto

White Lies returned to the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto yesterday (August 3, 2011) and played a blazing set of tracks off of their debut album, To Lose My Life and their latest record, Ritual. Compared to the other White Lies shows at Mod Club and previous Phoenix shows, it was not a sell-out show and less busy than the previous show. The lower turnout may have been a result of playing Osheaga in Montreal on Sunday this past weekend and people checked them out there instead.

White Lies Live at the Phoenix Toronto August 2011The crowd at last night’s show seemed to be relatively subdued since it was a rainy Wednesday evening. Everyone was singing along throughout the show started right with the opener, ‘Farewell to the Fairground’. They continued the crowd sing-a-long for ‘To Lose My Life’, and ‘The Price of Love’ which seemed to get the most response from the crowd in terms of joining in. The band played a strong set and kept my attention the entire time considering it was a barebones show with minimal lighting effects. The 2 additional members on synth and second guitar really added depth to their sound. It will be interesting to see if they move in a more synth heavy direction on their next album – we will have to wait and see.

The stand out tracks yesterday were ‘The Power & The Glory’ with its eerie synth lines which really came to life in the live setting, ‘Holy Ghost’, and ‘Death’ from their first album which they dedicated to Toronto. I would definitely check them out again when they come back through the city.
