Wooden Shjips Release New Video for Crossing

Wooden Shjips are preparing their breakneck tour schedule of the eastern US and Canada starting November 5 in Chicago.  They have release a new video for the song “Crossing” featuring loads of live footage from their 2010 shows.

Now, for a little background on Wooden Shjips. They formed in 2006 and self released a 10″ and 7″ that year as well as began gigging shortly after. Prior to 2006, Wooden Shjips was an experiment in primitive and minimalist rock. After it imploded, Ripley Johnson, guitar and vocals, assembled the current lineup of Dusty Jermier on bass, Nash Whalen on organ, and Omar Ahsanuddin on drums.

Their latest album, “West” marks the first time the band recorded in a proper studio, as well as the first time with an engineer (Phil Manley). West was recorded and mixed in six days at Lucky Cat Studios in San Francisco. It was mastered by Sonic Boom at Blanker Unisinn, Brooklyn, with additional mastering by Heba Kadry at the Lodge in New York. West is available through Thrill Jockey on MP3, CD and orange vinyl LP which includes a special bonus 7″ in full color sleeve featuring the non-album track “Phonograph” on the A side and a remix of the album track “Looking Out” by Peaking Lights on the B side.

Wye Oak Cover The Kinks and Danzig

Wye Oak dropping into the AV Club headquarters in Chicago two times to participate in their “Undercover” series. Each Undercover series starts with AV Club writers choosing 25 songs and inviting 25 bands to come to their offices in Chicago to perform one of the remaining tracks from the list.

Wye Oak’s first visit to the AV Club round room to cover The Kinks’ track “Strangers” was in the spring of 2010 – watch it here. They were joined by Shearwater’s Jonathan Meiburg, and their performance was one of the finalists in the AV Club’s poll for “Best of the Series.” Jenn and Andy were invited back in the following spring and chose to go a darker route by covering Danzig’s “Mother” – watch it here. This time they were joined by Callers’ Don “Donzig” Godwin on tenor horn.

Jenn said, “We had a blast participating in the AV Club’s Undercover series and were pleasantly surprised that so many people enjoyed our take on these two songs. We’re happy to have these versions released for those who were interested in owning them for themselves. Thanks to Merge and the AV Club for making it all happen.”

Merge will release the two covers recorded at the AV Club, “Strangers” b/w “Mother” as a limited-edition 7-inch and digital download on November 22.  Pre-order the 7-inch now in the Merge store.

The AV Club visited Jenn in Baltimore to visit her favourite local haunts and discuss their catchy track, “Holy Holy” from Civilian as part of their “One Track Mind” series. Watch the episode now at the AV Club.

The band will be out on tour in November and December in support of their latest album, “Civilian”.
